@petesalsich – Intellectual Property Lawyer, Reinvents The Traditional Law Firm Model w/ Focus on Social Media – #140Conf Road Trip

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Why on earth would an Intellectual Property lawyer come to a #140Conf Road Trip MeetUp?  Because Pete Salsich is reinventing a whole new way to practice law, serving growing companies that may not be able to afford, let alone even need a traditional law firm.

Pete co-founded Brick House Law Group a little over a year ago.  Even it’s name is telling of how he is disrupting the law firm model.  (Remember, most law firms carry the founders’ names and not a branded name that is so indigenous to the rich architectural style and heritage of St. Louis.)

Guest Blogger – Kevin Dougan – @prblog – Reflects on Cincinnati #140Conf Road Trip TweetUp w/ @jeffpulver

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Note:  even though the #140Conf Road Trip is over, the stories keep coming in.  Think of what follows not as breaking news (because it’s not) but rather a reflection of what a local community does when it comes together for events that bring the virtual to the real.  Than you Kevin Dougan for helping organize the event and reaching into your community on our behalf.

The final stop on Day One of the #140conf found @jeffpulver and team in Cincinnati for a Sunday evening RoadTrip TweetUp. The attendees, the stories and the entire experience remind me that no social media platform can replicate the original social network – meeting live and in person. Putting faces to names and Twitter handles is part of it. But you obviously learn so much more than you can from even the most well-crafted 140 character missive.

With more than 20 people in attendance, there were plenty of stories to tell and document about Cincinnati’s social media community. From something as simple as trading tips about the iPhone and iPad with @elliotcampbell and @JoeyWesselsto learning about the latest social media efforts at Union Terminal with @Doug4Cincy. Catching up with folks like @danieljohnsonjr @kristaneher and meeting folks for like @AmelahG and @jamieboyle for the first time reminds me of how essential these events really are.

Perhaps it was the dose of inspiration from Jeff as he explained his mission for #140conf. All of the scheduled events look like they have enormous potential. In a format that forces value from the speaker and optimizes every attendee’s investment of time and money, October’s event in Detroit is definitely worth attending.

Thanks to all who attended. Here are some links to Cincinnati Tweet Up Video and Pics. Below are the Twitter handles I recorded. I know I missed a few so let me know who’s not on the list.

Learn From @doug4cincy on How the Cincinnati Museum Center Connects With Social Media #140Conf Road Trip

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Cincinnati’s #140Conf Community Rocks.   We met with a wonderful group at the Cadillac Ranch near the city’s center at Fountain Square.  Special thanks to Kevin Dugan who helped rustle up the troops for this event.

There after some amazing virgin Bloody Mary’s to recover energy, and some appetizers, Jeff Pulver spoke to the social-media community. Doug McDonald, CEO of the Cincinnati Museum Center talked about the city’s great business leaders such as Proctor and Gamble and Macys and then explained how his field, museum’s have to learn from them and engage the public.

Video: Meet #CLE #140Conf Community Members including @mongoosemetrics @consumerati

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

The 140 Conference Road Trip began with perhaps one of the most unusual meetups in the short history of social media – at the Continental Airlines baggage check. Five Cleveland area folks took Jeff Pulver up on his offer to begin the 12-state, 8-day trek through the Midwest by meeting at the luggage carousel.  And, it was there that roadistas Alan Weinkrantz and Mo Krochmal first met in person after lots of phone calls in the days prior to the Sunday start of the event.

In this video, hear John Burnell, a journalist, talk about the impact social media has had on his life. Then, after Jeff Pulver arrives, Kathleen Colan, who tweets @mongoosemetrics and @consumerati, talks about meeting Krochmal for the first time in person, after sharing conversations through Twitter.  Kasey Crabtree talks about how social media has made an impact on her social life – she has met her life “peeps.”

Engaging with Kodak’s Brand On the #140Conf Road Trip – @kodakevents @kodakcb #140KodakMoments

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Having a sponsor like Kodak provide guidance, support, and product that we can not only use, but give away as gifts during the #140Conf Road Trip, brings an opportunity to engage a brand into the experience of an eight day moving road trip.

I would be overstating the obvious to say that Kodak is a perfect match for an event like this.  But there is more to this process than just sticking their logo up during our events.

At heart, it’s about the Characters, and there is no better way to illustrate the Characters we meet and the stories they tell, with photography and video.

We had a Kodak Zi8, Playsport, and  Z950 Digital Camera to use.  We also gave away several Zi8 and ESP 5250 Printers to winners along the way.  Product winners went to worthy causes including an Iraqi War Veteran, a new Co-working Space in St. Louis, and a parent in Minneapolis who had a college bound son who had just asked his Dad for this product.

On this road trip, we were lucky to have Mo Krochmal join us as an embedded journalist who did much of the video story telling using the Kodak Zi8.  The photo gallery in this post has several photos of Mo using the Zi8, capturing stories which you may view on his Facebook page.

Thank you Tina Clark, Kodak’s Interactive Marketing and Brand Manager.

Thank you Jenny Chisney, Kodak’s Chief Blogger.

You’re both great story tellers in your own right!

Cincinnati Stories from the #140conf Road Trip Tweetup; Will @jeffpulver ride the bull when he’s in Cincinnati?**

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

By Kevin Dugan

Will @jeffpulver ride the bull when he’s in Cincinnati?**

The fourth stop on the #140Conf Road Trip Tweetup will allow for a few of the stories from Cincinnati’s social media community to be told. Exploring “The State of Now” in The Queen City yields a well-known list of businesses impacted by social media.

But instead of exploring obvious examples like any of the nine Fortune 500 companies headquartered in town, consider a longer, albeit less obvious, list. It includes startups like ShareThis and Buzzvoice, seed stage venture accelerators like The Brandery as well as communities like Girlfriendology and online culinary passionistas like Cooking with Caitlin.

Not to mention groups formed with the sole purpose of fueling the above lists. New Media Cincinnati and Cincinnati Social Media (#CincySM) help people and businesses use social media.

#CincySM is excited to host a stop on the #140conf Road Trip. As a founder of the more than 1,500 member group, along with Daniel LallyStacy Cole and Dave Knox, I can tell you that Twitter is one of the primary reasons CincySM exists. A little over two years ago, Albert Maruggi was in town on business and held a tweetup on behalf of Social Media Breakfast. I saw his tweet the night before and that morning two dozen folks, including Jason Falls, put names to faces.

Since then CincySM has hosted events on everything from building community with Jory Des Jardins and community management with Six Apart to Innovation with Tim Westergren and social shopping with GroupOn. These events are in addition to helping tell the stories above.

The #140conf brings us offline to talk about online. This action completes the circuit of social media and it powers CincySM. We’re looking forward to participating in the #140conf as it builds up to its Boston, Los Angeles and Detroit events.

**Since Buick is sponsoring the road trip, we’re holding the event at Cadillac Ranch. There’s a mechanical bull so we’re wondering what it’ll take to get Jeff on the bull?

Doubletree Downtown Cleveland / Lakeside Rocks (Literally) @doubletreehtls #140Conf Road Trip

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Yes, the Doubletree downtown Cleveland / Lakeside Rocks.   It’s a great hotel, they get business travelers, and it’s just down the street from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Even if you bring a car, leave it the garage if you have any errands or places you want to go to in the downtown area.  They have a great (and free) shuttle bus that will take you anywhere you want to go.

Doubltree is a sponsor of the #140conf Road Trip and we thank you for your tender loving care when Jeff Pulver, Mo Krochmal, and I are traveling.

Be sure to follow Doubletree Hotels on Twitter.

#140Conf Road Trip Has New Team Member. Meet Mo Krochmal @krochmal

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Mo Krochmal, is about to become a member of the #140Conf Road Trip Crew, joining Jeff Pulver and me as we embark on our journey to meet, connect and engage with the #140Conf Community in the Midwest.  Mo is an accomplished journalist and Professor at Hofstra University.  Here’s his introductory post.  Welcome Mo.  We look forward to having you join us and bringing your gifts of story telling and knowledge of media to this wonderful adventure on which we are about to embark on.

I traveled the country, well actually, both coasts and some in Chicago.

After the end of the dot-com era, I was without a job so I took a grand roadtrip with a friend and we followed a Civil War path through New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, some 5,000 miles for research that I’m still conducting. Then 9/11 came, and I found myself as a volunteer at Ground Zero, working for the Salvation Army, handing out sandwiches and water to the folks on the pile. I wrote about what I did and saw for UPI.

My next job took me, still on the web, to another corner of innovation, as I covered the emerging molecular biology tools market. I learned about genomics, proteomics and about sequencers and microarrays.
But, 9/11 had made me think about what I could do to give back to journalism and I figured that the best way to help was by teaching 30 to 50 fledgling journalists a semester and Hofstra University granted me the honor and the high privilege of joining the journalism faculty as the first digital media professor.

I started teaching Twitter as part of my class in March 2007 when Steve Rubel, who I had worked with at CMP, came to my class after SXSW and shared his knowledge and it was on. I delight in getting e-mails from former students that remark that I was certainly ahead of my time, and yes, I was. You would think that teaching today’s “digital natives” would be easy as they are so inculcated with technology. I am here to say, no, that’s not really how it is.

It took a lot of work on my syllabus and sales skills for students to understand that digital technology was changing journalism and the wave didn’t really break until 2009-2010, the just-past school year. I set the stage last summer with, yes, a road trip. I went back home to North Carolina and shared the entire way – Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. You can read about what I learned at http://krochmal.posterous.com/analyzing-mobile-and-social-media-from-the-ro

Prior to that, however, Jeff Pulver came into my life and I am so grateful. I first met Jeff when I volunteered for the initial 140conf in New York. I was there at the theater at 6:30 that morning setting up and I worked the green room. I made friends at that conference that I still hold dear.

Then, the fall New York 140conf meetup came around and I asked if I could speak about teaching digital media and about the changes in journalism and I made more friends. Jeff asked me to speak at the most recent 140conf in New York and I was happy to say yes. But, this time, I did not want to be the sage on the stage for 10 minutes and I asked six students to join me to talk about their vision for the future of journalism. The students were so nervous and excited and they were wonderful. We celebrated at a nearby Japanese noodle place and talked and talked. Those students were the cream of the crop at Hofstra and they will make a difference in the field of journalism.  I just know it.
