#140Conf Speaker, Mark Horvath, Shares His Insights on The Homeless

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

This past week lots of great things happened and I’ll write about more of them soon. But maybe the coolest was visiting with Ann Marie who is no longer homeless. Many of you may remember her from 140 Conference Los Angeles. Ann joined me on stage while she was still homeless and we received a standing ovation at the Kodak Theater. Now remember I used to be homeless in front of the area of where the Kodak was built so I will be forever grateful to Jeff Pulver for letting us on that stage. You can watch the powerful video here.

Ann Marie in housing

I’d like to say that I found Ann Marie in Chicago, but the truth is that she found me. Ann Marie uses social media to escape from her world and connect with others. When I arrived in the Windy City I received a tweet from @padschicago and the next day we arranged to meet in a train station.

Chicago blogger and now friend Megan Cottrell happened to be with me the day I met Ann Marie and wrote what still may be my favorite Invisible People post. PLEASE read this powerful post here. You can watch Ann’s original Invisible People video here.

Ann Marie has been sharing on social media that she found permanent supportive housing which is amazing. She has been tweeting pics and videos of her new place so I had a feeling she’d be OK if we stopped by for a visit.  Marla Schulman and I jumped into a cab and went to Lakeview area of Chicago to visit her. Ann was waiting on the sidewalk for us. She looked great – like a normal person not a street person.  I know first hand how hard it is to pull yourself out of homelessness. Ann had been on the streets for many years making it even harder. But she should be very proud of her accomplishment because she did this. She fought all all kinds of battles to get off the streets. I am so happy for her.

I am honored to be speaking next month at 140 Conference NYC. Great things happen at 140 Conference and you don’t want to miss it.

#140Conf Speaker Contribution, “Ten Qualities of Pure Consciousness” by Deepak Chopra

Friday, May 27th, 2011

#140Conf NY Speaker, Deepak Chopra, contributes his insights on Pure Consciousness.  Deepak speaks on Day 2 at 3:30 PM EST via Skype.  Follow him here on Twitter.

Pure consciousness isn’t a way of thinking or a point of view. It’s the pure potential from which everything springs. The qualities of pure consciousness seem subtle at first, but they grow more powerful as you proceed farther on your path. Here are the chief qualities described in the great wisdom traditions.

Ten Qualities of Pure Consciousness

1. Pure consciousness is silent and peaceful.  When you experience this quality, you are free of inner conflict, anger, and fear.

2. Pure consciousness is self-sufficient, or centered within itself. When you experience this quality, the need for distraction vanishes. You are comfortable simply being here. The mind is not restless in its quest for stimulation

3. Pure consciousness is fully awake.  This quality is experienced as mental alertness and freshness. The mind is no longer dull or fatigued.

4. Pure consciousness contains infinite potential; it is open to any outcome. When you experience this quality, you are no longer bound by fixed habits and beliefs. The horizon seems open, the future full of possibilities.  The greater your experience of pure potential, the more creative you become.

5. Pure consciousness is self-organizing.  It effortlessly coordinates all aspects of existence. You are experiencing this quality when things fall into place of their own accord. There is less struggle to force different parts of life to harmonize, because you are more in tune with the natural harmony that runs through everything.

6. Pure consciousness is spontaneous.  Timetables, boundaries, and rules don’t apply; nor are they needed.  Breaking free of old constraints, whatever they may be, makes you feel safer about expressing who you are and what you want in a spontaneous manner. This is the state of absolute freedom, which you experience whenever you feel liberated.

7. Pure consciousness is dynamic.  Although not in motion, it provides energy for all the activity in the universe. You experience this quality when you feel that you can fully embrace life. You have the energy and the will to do great things.

8. Pure consciousness is blissful.  This is the root of happiness and its highest expression. Any surge of happiness, whatever the cause, is a taste of bliss. An orgasm is blissful, but so is compassion. Every experience of love can also be traced back to its origins in bliss.

9. Pure consciousness is knowing.  It contains the answers to all questions and, more crucially, the practical knowledge needed for unfolding the universe, the human body, and the mind. Any experience of intuition, insight, or truth taps into this quality.

10. Pure consciousness is whole.  It is all-encompassing. Therefore, despite the infinite diversity of the physical world, at adeeper level only one process is occurring: wholeness is moving like a single ocean that holds every wave. You experience this quality when your life makes sense and you feel part of Nature; you are at home simply by being alive.

As you can see, I haven’t used any religious terms, yet this is divinity, stripped of the demands of faith and obedience.  At this point, you cannot be expected simply to accept that these ten qualities are, in essence, divine. However, you can use this idea as a working hypothesis. In that sense, you are the experimenter and the experiment. If you are actually transcending everyday reality, these qualities will grow in your life.  You will notice more fulfillment and creativity.  Your sense of being secure will grow as you come to know who you really are.

#140Conf Speaker Contribution, “The Era of Web Personalization: How Customized Online Shopping CanEnhance Your Life” by Rob LoCascio, Founder & CEO, LivePerson

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

LivePerson CEO, Rob LoCascio, will be one our amazing speakers during the #140Conf NY on June 15/16.  Thanks Rob for your insights on web personalization and your sponsorship support..we look forward to hearing your insights.

With the domination of social media, mobile apps, and tweeting as the preferred way to connect, the consumer’s world has changed dramatically. And for the better ! The reality of our times is that we need to consume to keep up, to impress, to stay relevant. We are consuming all the time, and with the help of intelligent technology, our consumer experience is becoming more enjoyable, more personal, and we are able to spend our money more wisely.

A personalized shopping experience is always available if you are the world’s most popular celebrity.  Saks will gladly stay open late for you, pre-select the best items based on your tastes, and assist you every step of the way. But now we can all experience personalized shopping – at least, virtually.

Imagine you’re in your favorite online clothing store, and the page you land on displays all clothes in your size, your style, and price range. No searching, clicking, or seeking a customer service number. It’s a completely personal experience, instantly.

Now, imagine shopping for a flat screen TV online. You browse the selections for a bit, and place the one with just the right specs in your cart. But instead of completing the purchase, you change your mind…the item is a bit over your budget. You resume browsing and…pop! A coupon for the TV you wanted to buy appears on your screen. Now you’re ready to purchase.  You’re happy, the retailer is happy.

This is now a consumer’s reality. Here at LivePerson, we call this “intelligent engagement.” Through innovative technology such as LivePerson Intelligent Engagement Solutions, businesses are connecting with individual customers through real-time chat, to offer personalized help to shoppers who need it. Intelligent Engagement technology allows businesses to treat each customer in a way that is special and relevant to them. You will receive a special offer, a customized landing page, or receive an invitation to chat with customer service, all based on your personal needs and demands.

The consumer’s world is heading in an exciting direction, and we think you’ll like it.

#140Conf Panel Moderator, Joanna Belbey, on “Getting to Yes.”

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

#140Conf NY panel moderator, Joanna Belbey contributes this post on “Getting to Yes.”  Joanna is co-founder of @TheBGKGroup, a firm that provides compliance and product training for financial industry. Details here: www.thebgkgroup.com

If you have a vision of using social media within your firm, you can make it happen. But, you need to make it as easy as possible for decision makers to say “yes”.

One challenge of implementing  “The State of Now” within your organization is that decision makers often lack personal experience with social media. Perhaps they’ve used Facebook to see family photos. Or have an incomplete profile on LinkedIn. Twitter and other sites? Doubtful. And no one likes to be embarrassed by admitting they don’t understand what you are talking about. Especially a senior level executive.

For the uninitiated, it’s easier and safer to say “No, too risky and expensive” or “No, there’s no ROI”, or in highly regulated industries like financial services and pharmaceuticals, “We’ll be out of compliance”.

The solution is to create an environment where it’s safe for senior decision makers to learn how to use social media and to experience its benefits first hand. Conduct private tutoring sessions with senior executives so you can help them experiment without looking foolish. Partner with your legal and compliance colleagues to navigate the regulatory waters together. Engage IT right at the beginning of the project to tap their expertise. Be enthusiastic and never defensive as you work your way through the organization.

By getting everyone on board, and working together, you can move the organization to a “yes” to leverage the power of “The State of Now” within your firm.

Catch Up With the Social Evolution at #140Conf

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

By Jeff Pulver

I believe we are in the beginning stages of a social revolution which will redefine, maybe forever, the relationship between companies, organizations, governments, educational institutions and their “customers.”

The transition will be evolutionary and less revolutionary, as companies come to realize they have no choice other than to listen to what their customers are saying using their social communication platforms of choice, and customers discover the innate power they have (but don’t always know it) by individually and sometimes collectively speaking up.

We are entering into the second half of 2011, where the balance of power continues to shift. A new era in buyer/seller relationships is being defined. This shift will in turn have possible dramatic effects in other parts of the business ecosystem.

We will be exploring elements of this social revolution when the next #140conf event convenes in New York City on June 15-16 at the 92nd Street Y. This worldwide gathering will explore the continued effects of the real-time Internet on all facits of life and “me” the people.

To date our event community includes delegates representing 14 Countries and from across 25 States.

As the content DJ for #140conf, as I work on mixing the schedule, I try to share the voices of as many people from a variety of backgrounds and geographies as possible.

Please take a look at the current schedule ( http://nyc.140conf.com/schedule ) to get a feel of the event.

If you are thinking about attending, today would be a great time to secure your seat. With a ticket costing just US$ 140 for the two days, register NOW to guarantee yourself access to the event over at: http://nyc.140conf.com/register. Price goes to $249 a seat after June 3rd.

Graffiti To Build Hope For Homeless In New York At #140Conf

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

On June 15-16, 2011 at the #140Conf in New York City you’ll hear from Scott Mills(@GraffitiBMXCop) and graffiti artists Kedre Browne (@BubzArt), Jessey Pacho (@ArtOfPhade). Their message will inspire the lives of many young people around the world and provide proof that graffiti can paint a positive message. Nicholas Maharaj (@Twittnick) also a “student” of Scott’s will be present to capture all the action and post to social media.

My name is @StephenWelton. I was asked to write this and share just a glimpse of the positive impacts which developed as a result of us (just a couple of cops) embracing the opportunity to leverage social media to reach out to others and make a difference. A way to bridge the gap between the online and the offline communities in our social world. It happened when Scott Mills a Toronto Police officer began to share his vision with me through social networking. Our visions aligned and we’re now in progress creating a series of true stories.

We know fifteen minutes at the #140Conf  NY will only begin to describe the community building and the life long relationships that developed when a graffiti artist reached out to a cop on Youtube. A true story now about how some cops from Canada are tuned in through social networking to change lives by helping youth navigate from negative to positive.

While in New York City these graffiti artists plan to paint a mural dedicated to the cause of creating awareness about homeless issues (@InvisiblePeople inspired by @HaRdLyNoRmAl ) and prove that anyone can change their lives despite odds.

A second chance is often all anyone needs to turn their life around. Someone to plant a seed of hope and opportunity within them. Someone willing to listen. Someone to lead. I’ve spent my career as a cop thus far sharing real life stories of my very own troubled youth. A story that speaks from real life experience. One that wasn’t so bright. Until someone stepped in to mentor me. I’ve never forgotten my past. It’s through social media now that Scott Mills and other cops like myself are now focused on moving the ideas forward.

We feel the responsibility to “paint the walls of negativity on and offline” with a message of hope, possibility and opportunity, to mentor youth to be BE FOR something positive. We will continue to identify and connect with leaders to develop thriving communities, and most importantly, create opportunities for others to live a life they can be proud of.

Sound a little strange? Perhaps, but luckily we’ve seen the real time success and results of what happens when relationships and technology converge for good and even for the safety of others.

We cannot do this alone. There is a degree of the unknown, with a focus on a purpose bigger than us: a process, a plan and inspiration from people like @JoanneWallace + @JeffPulver.  The hope is that the payoff – the success of our youth and safety of our global community – is well worth the work. “Hope, Vision and Action” as Scott often says.

Today, and everyday, we can partner together to make the world a better place. We intend on creating the structure in which youth can achieve their goals and be successful. Visions to get at the root cause of our societal challenges, like that of @InvisiblePeople are inspiring, and we want to celebrate those visions.   We believe that community led programs aimed at world safety like Crime Stoppers International ( @CSIWorld ) are a key ingredient to a strategy to create a safe environments to PREVENT violence and allow essential programs aimed at issues like homelessness to effectively operate. Working together and social alchemy are a key messages that will be spoken about by these speakers at the #140conf.

We’re excited to hear from all the voices at the #140conf as we launch our ideas to the world. We believe the invisible can become incredible. The wind of resistance can be felt now and again but like the idea of the airplane, it takes off against the wind….

@HardlyNormal @InvisiblePeople @Gangprevntion @JoanneWallace @Lawscomm -Thank you for believing. Thank you to @JeffPulver for believing in the invisible and being a leader:  for living, creating and leading in the State of NOW. We appreciate you.We look forward to connecting, conversing and contributing at the #140conf.

Engage us in conversation #140conf:  @GraffitiBMXCop @StephenWelton @BubzArt @Twittnick @ArtOfPhade

PS – Be sure to ask Scott about how he envisions one of Sir Richard Branson’s Jets being painted with a message that will travel the world sharing a vision of hope & raising awareness about homelessness and preventing crime through Crime Stoppers. Oh… and having world champion BMX rider from Truro, Nova Scotia Canada @DrewBezanson fly through the air over the jet creating one of the most highly viewed videos on the web! … all with a focus on helping those less fortunate than ourselves, and all developed because of relationships and technology. Looking forward to community building in New York!

#140Conf NY Speaker Contribution: “Awaken Your Superhero” by Christopher S. Penn

Thursday, May 19th, 2011
Christopher S. Penn is Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at Blue Sky Factory, an email marketing company based in Baltimore, as well as co-founder of the groundbreaking PodCamp New Media Community Conference, and co-host of the Marketing Over Coffee marketing podcast. He is an adjunct professor of Internet marketing and the lead subject matter expert and professor of Advanced Social Media at the University of San Francisco.

Consider this: from where you sit reading this right now, you have access to streams of real-time information from all over the world, knowledge spread the moment it’s created. You can read with just a clicks of a mouse the entire sum of publicly available human knowledge. You can watch far-off places, communicate with thousands, if not millions of people with just a few strokes on the keyboard, influence and affect people next door and thousands of miles away. You can singlehandedly garner the attention of millions and direct it like a stream at worthy causes.

In another time, in another place, these would have been powers reserved only for the greatest of superheroes. Comic books would have been written about such a person with these powers. Movies would have been made in Hollywood featuring you. But this isn’t the comics. This isn’t fantasy. This is here, now, in real-time…

… and you are the superhero. That person is you, here and now. You have superpowers that a generation ago would have been not only legendary, but even absurd. Novels of years past would have called infinite knowledge an amazing feat; we call it Google.

Action hero movies of yesteryear would have called global mindreading an astonishing power; we call it Twitter.

Here’s the catch: we have superhero powers, but we don’t necessary have superhero awareness. We don’t necessarily know what we’re capable of, don’t necessarily understand all of the different ways we can use our powers.

However, when you attend Jeff Pulver’s 140 Characters Conference in New York City, you’ll learn what it takes to bring superhero potential to life in yourself and in those around you. You’ll understand the other critical missing pieces to awaken your superhero and do great things.

#140Conf NY Speaker Contribution: “Voiceless People Now Get a Voice” by Craig Newmark

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Craig Newmark will be one of speakers at the upcoming #140Conf NY, June 15 / 16. Follow and connect with him on Twitter. While mostly known as the founder of Craigslist, his CraigConnects site helps connect people of good will for the common good by highlighting nonprofits that are making an impact in Community Building, Journalism Integrity, Middle East, Open & Accountable Government, Service & Volunteering, Technology for Social Good and Veterans issues.

This decade is a pivotal time in human history; formerly powerless and voiceless people now get a voice and power comparable to existing elites.  It happens when people at the grassroots connect to form a greater voice and to demand power in a manner that checks and balances people with power and riches.

This is not revolution, it’s a rebalancing similar to all power shifts in human history. What’s different is that it arises from the grassroots in a manner that could be self re-inventing and sustaining.

The deal is that when we work together, we can get stuff done. That’s still a matter not of research but of people trying out what works. The use of Twitter and Facebook connects people who were isolated, feeling that they were the only ones who felt the same way about, say, authoritarian regimes.

Previously it would take years of authoritation oppression to stir up a tipping point; now people can use social media tools to make it happen in weeks.

Beyond that, we all need reliable means of news we can trust.

Networks of professional and citizen curators are beginning to emerge through social media. People are working on networks of fact-checkers and discussing the hard part: how to get people, in the millions, to care about the facts.

Total moving target; more later…
