#140Conf NY Speaker, Julian Bond – @DMC_Julian Writes…“What Sesame Street, Chuck Norris, & sneakers can teach me about Twitter”

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

#140Conf NY starts tomorrow and here is speaker, Julian Bond’s contribution and preview of his talk at the event.

I’m so excited to be attending & speaking at my 2nd #140 Conference this week in New York City. I attended the one this past October in my hometown of Detroit, and while the experience of speaking there was great, I found that the most exciting part about the conference to me was the great diversity of topics and speakers all unified together to talk about how they participate in the wild, crazy, awesome online world known as Twitter.

This year, I’m presenting my talk entitled “The Adventures of @DMC_Julian at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC)”, where I’ll speak about my experience using Twitter for my hospital system in Michigan, and as I was initially looking at the schedule for #140conf NYC to see what time my talk was, I noticed all of these super interesting talk titles come across my screen. From “Sesame Street” to “Hugs” and “Sneakers” to “Chuck Norris”, I couldn’t believe how many great diverse talks that I was going to have the honor of being a part of in the lineup.

The overall theme that I’ve seen from all of the talks is…“Learning From Outside of Your Own Circle”…that is what I believe is the best part and overall lesson behind #140conf. While I believe that it’s great for one to attend conferences that focus solely on one’s own field (like with myself and the hospital/healthcare industry & social media), I also believe that it’s sometimes underrated and ultimately invaluable for one to truly venture out and learn outside of their current field.

So not only am I seriously very excited to be part of a great speaking lineup at #140conf NYC, I am also equally excited to learn from all of the cool-looking sessions planned and hopefully I’ll have enough room in my noggin to store all of the great info gained to share with my awesome Twitter peeps back home in good ol’ Detroit.

#140Conf Speaker, Anita Cochran, On… “Brand ME Baby.”

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

#140Conf Speaker, and former News Anchor, Anita Cochran, shares her insights on making the transition from traditional media and becoming a brand.  View her site at anitacochran.tv

I’m getting ready to speak in New York City about what else, TWITTER, and Facebook and social media.   It’s Jeff Pulver‘s latest venture, and if you turned up or tuned into  the #140 Conf/Small Town in Hutchinson last fall you know how much fun it will be.   It’s all about how the real time web has changed our lives (in small towns in Kansas and ACROSS the GLOBE).   The funny thing is, the reason I’m speaking has left me almost speechless again.

In Kansas, my name was associated with local news for 20 years.  Two years ago, I left the anchor desk and relied on my family, friends and yes, my social media presence to remake my life.  Now, as a somewhat social media “insider” I’m finding that what I experienced in real life as a local “TV Celebrity” is exactly what you need to be aware of here on the web!!  “What, I’M a BRAND?”

This #140 Conference New York City is all about Branding.  For 20 years I was branded as the face of the TV Station I worked for.  I was paid, to be their face.  It came at a cost, a local  News Anchor represents her station first, her self LAST.   Needless to say, when I no longer had to worry about how someone else wanted my hair to look, or what I could or couldn’t say, I felt FREE.  That freedom was first realized here on the internet.  I wrote about whatever I wanted, I posted pictures that station management might have cringed at, (have you seen my facebook??), and I became a person instead of a company figure-head.  I thought.

Today as I was about to blog about a not so perfect experience with a cruise line staffer, I thought, “Really, is that what I want people who first come to my blog to know about me? That I’m a whiner?”   It turns out that even though I became more real as a person here on the internet,  Anita Cochran became a BRAND in the process.  If you blog, facebook, twitter or even post reviews on the internet YOU are a Brand too.   “What, I’m a Brand?” takes me to New York next week where I’ll share what I’ve learned spending 20 years as someone else’s brand, and spending the last few as my own.  Some is exactly the same, some is NOT.

You can watch the speech live right here……I’m on at 10:50 on June 16th.  Also, check out the other speakers, WOW, how did I make it on that list??  I think it’s either Good Branding….or Unintentional Branding, watch and you can decide for yourself which it really is.

#140Conf Speaker, Mark Horvath, Shares His Insights on The Homeless

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

This past week lots of great things happened and I’ll write about more of them soon. But maybe the coolest was visiting with Ann Marie who is no longer homeless. Many of you may remember her from 140 Conference Los Angeles. Ann joined me on stage while she was still homeless and we received a standing ovation at the Kodak Theater. Now remember I used to be homeless in front of the area of where the Kodak was built so I will be forever grateful to Jeff Pulver for letting us on that stage. You can watch the powerful video here.

Ann Marie in housing

I’d like to say that I found Ann Marie in Chicago, but the truth is that she found me. Ann Marie uses social media to escape from her world and connect with others. When I arrived in the Windy City I received a tweet from @padschicago and the next day we arranged to meet in a train station.

Chicago blogger and now friend Megan Cottrell happened to be with me the day I met Ann Marie and wrote what still may be my favorite Invisible People post. PLEASE read this powerful post here. You can watch Ann’s original Invisible People video here.

Ann Marie has been sharing on social media that she found permanent supportive housing which is amazing. She has been tweeting pics and videos of her new place so I had a feeling she’d be OK if we stopped by for a visit.  Marla Schulman and I jumped into a cab and went to Lakeview area of Chicago to visit her. Ann was waiting on the sidewalk for us. She looked great – like a normal person not a street person.  I know first hand how hard it is to pull yourself out of homelessness. Ann had been on the streets for many years making it even harder. But she should be very proud of her accomplishment because she did this. She fought all all kinds of battles to get off the streets. I am so happy for her.

I am honored to be speaking next month at 140 Conference NYC. Great things happen at 140 Conference and you don’t want to miss it.

#140Conf Speaker Contribution, “Ten Qualities of Pure Consciousness” by Deepak Chopra

Friday, May 27th, 2011

#140Conf NY Speaker, Deepak Chopra, contributes his insights on Pure Consciousness.  Deepak speaks on Day 2 at 3:30 PM EST via Skype.  Follow him here on Twitter.

Pure consciousness isn’t a way of thinking or a point of view. It’s the pure potential from which everything springs. The qualities of pure consciousness seem subtle at first, but they grow more powerful as you proceed farther on your path. Here are the chief qualities described in the great wisdom traditions.

Ten Qualities of Pure Consciousness

1. Pure consciousness is silent and peaceful.  When you experience this quality, you are free of inner conflict, anger, and fear.

2. Pure consciousness is self-sufficient, or centered within itself. When you experience this quality, the need for distraction vanishes. You are comfortable simply being here. The mind is not restless in its quest for stimulation

3. Pure consciousness is fully awake.  This quality is experienced as mental alertness and freshness. The mind is no longer dull or fatigued.

4. Pure consciousness contains infinite potential; it is open to any outcome. When you experience this quality, you are no longer bound by fixed habits and beliefs. The horizon seems open, the future full of possibilities.  The greater your experience of pure potential, the more creative you become.

5. Pure consciousness is self-organizing.  It effortlessly coordinates all aspects of existence. You are experiencing this quality when things fall into place of their own accord. There is less struggle to force different parts of life to harmonize, because you are more in tune with the natural harmony that runs through everything.

6. Pure consciousness is spontaneous.  Timetables, boundaries, and rules don’t apply; nor are they needed.  Breaking free of old constraints, whatever they may be, makes you feel safer about expressing who you are and what you want in a spontaneous manner. This is the state of absolute freedom, which you experience whenever you feel liberated.

7. Pure consciousness is dynamic.  Although not in motion, it provides energy for all the activity in the universe. You experience this quality when you feel that you can fully embrace life. You have the energy and the will to do great things.

8. Pure consciousness is blissful.  This is the root of happiness and its highest expression. Any surge of happiness, whatever the cause, is a taste of bliss. An orgasm is blissful, but so is compassion. Every experience of love can also be traced back to its origins in bliss.

9. Pure consciousness is knowing.  It contains the answers to all questions and, more crucially, the practical knowledge needed for unfolding the universe, the human body, and the mind. Any experience of intuition, insight, or truth taps into this quality.

10. Pure consciousness is whole.  It is all-encompassing. Therefore, despite the infinite diversity of the physical world, at adeeper level only one process is occurring: wholeness is moving like a single ocean that holds every wave. You experience this quality when your life makes sense and you feel part of Nature; you are at home simply by being alive.

As you can see, I haven’t used any religious terms, yet this is divinity, stripped of the demands of faith and obedience.  At this point, you cannot be expected simply to accept that these ten qualities are, in essence, divine. However, you can use this idea as a working hypothesis. In that sense, you are the experimenter and the experiment. If you are actually transcending everyday reality, these qualities will grow in your life.  You will notice more fulfillment and creativity.  Your sense of being secure will grow as you come to know who you really are.

#140Conf Speaker Contribution, “The Era of Web Personalization: How Customized Online Shopping CanEnhance Your Life” by Rob LoCascio, Founder & CEO, LivePerson

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

LivePerson CEO, Rob LoCascio, will be one our amazing speakers during the #140Conf NY on June 15/16.  Thanks Rob for your insights on web personalization and your sponsorship support..we look forward to hearing your insights.

With the domination of social media, mobile apps, and tweeting as the preferred way to connect, the consumer’s world has changed dramatically. And for the better ! The reality of our times is that we need to consume to keep up, to impress, to stay relevant. We are consuming all the time, and with the help of intelligent technology, our consumer experience is becoming more enjoyable, more personal, and we are able to spend our money more wisely.

A personalized shopping experience is always available if you are the world’s most popular celebrity.  Saks will gladly stay open late for you, pre-select the best items based on your tastes, and assist you every step of the way. But now we can all experience personalized shopping – at least, virtually.

Imagine you’re in your favorite online clothing store, and the page you land on displays all clothes in your size, your style, and price range. No searching, clicking, or seeking a customer service number. It’s a completely personal experience, instantly.

Now, imagine shopping for a flat screen TV online. You browse the selections for a bit, and place the one with just the right specs in your cart. But instead of completing the purchase, you change your mind…the item is a bit over your budget. You resume browsing and…pop! A coupon for the TV you wanted to buy appears on your screen. Now you’re ready to purchase.  You’re happy, the retailer is happy.

This is now a consumer’s reality. Here at LivePerson, we call this “intelligent engagement.” Through innovative technology such as LivePerson Intelligent Engagement Solutions, businesses are connecting with individual customers through real-time chat, to offer personalized help to shoppers who need it. Intelligent Engagement technology allows businesses to treat each customer in a way that is special and relevant to them. You will receive a special offer, a customized landing page, or receive an invitation to chat with customer service, all based on your personal needs and demands.

The consumer’s world is heading in an exciting direction, and we think you’ll like it.

#140Conf Panel Moderator, Joanna Belbey, on “Getting to Yes.”

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

#140Conf NY panel moderator, Joanna Belbey contributes this post on “Getting to Yes.”  Joanna is co-founder of @TheBGKGroup, a firm that provides compliance and product training for financial industry. Details here: www.thebgkgroup.com

If you have a vision of using social media within your firm, you can make it happen. But, you need to make it as easy as possible for decision makers to say “yes”.

One challenge of implementing  “The State of Now” within your organization is that decision makers often lack personal experience with social media. Perhaps they’ve used Facebook to see family photos. Or have an incomplete profile on LinkedIn. Twitter and other sites? Doubtful. And no one likes to be embarrassed by admitting they don’t understand what you are talking about. Especially a senior level executive.

For the uninitiated, it’s easier and safer to say “No, too risky and expensive” or “No, there’s no ROI”, or in highly regulated industries like financial services and pharmaceuticals, “We’ll be out of compliance”.

The solution is to create an environment where it’s safe for senior decision makers to learn how to use social media and to experience its benefits first hand. Conduct private tutoring sessions with senior executives so you can help them experiment without looking foolish. Partner with your legal and compliance colleagues to navigate the regulatory waters together. Engage IT right at the beginning of the project to tap their expertise. Be enthusiastic and never defensive as you work your way through the organization.

By getting everyone on board, and working together, you can move the organization to a “yes” to leverage the power of “The State of Now” within your firm.

Catch Up With the Social Evolution at #140Conf

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

By Jeff Pulver

I believe we are in the beginning stages of a social revolution which will redefine, maybe forever, the relationship between companies, organizations, governments, educational institutions and their “customers.”

The transition will be evolutionary and less revolutionary, as companies come to realize they have no choice other than to listen to what their customers are saying using their social communication platforms of choice, and customers discover the innate power they have (but don’t always know it) by individually and sometimes collectively speaking up.

We are entering into the second half of 2011, where the balance of power continues to shift. A new era in buyer/seller relationships is being defined. This shift will in turn have possible dramatic effects in other parts of the business ecosystem.

We will be exploring elements of this social revolution when the next #140conf event convenes in New York City on June 15-16 at the 92nd Street Y. This worldwide gathering will explore the continued effects of the real-time Internet on all facits of life and “me” the people.

To date our event community includes delegates representing 14 Countries and from across 25 States.

As the content DJ for #140conf, as I work on mixing the schedule, I try to share the voices of as many people from a variety of backgrounds and geographies as possible.

Please take a look at the current schedule ( http://nyc.140conf.com/schedule ) to get a feel of the event.

If you are thinking about attending, today would be a great time to secure your seat. With a ticket costing just US$ 140 for the two days, register NOW to guarantee yourself access to the event over at: http://nyc.140conf.com/register. Price goes to $249 a seat after June 3rd.
