#140conf Community Update by @JeffPulver

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

By Jeff Pulver

During 2010 I hosted and produced a total of ten #140conf conferences across the around the world. I enjoyed having the opportunity to share our stage with several hundred pretty amazing people. People who shared their stories about the real-time web and how it is changing their lives and their businesses.

I am currently working on the plans for #140conf in 2011. What I can confirm so far is that #140conf will be returning to SXSW in March, NYC in June and SmallTown will return next September. If you or someone you know would be interested in sponsoring one or more of our future events, please let me know. I would appreciate having the conversation before the end of this month. In December a new business to business conference is being introduced to the #140conf community, @BrandsConf.

@BrandsConf – Exploring the Humanization of Brands will be taking place on December 2nd in New York City at the 92nd Street Y. website: http://BrandsConf.com. You can register for this event over at: http://BrandsConf.com/register.

I have received several requests from Agencies and Brands for special pricing for multiple ticket purchases. It seems we are striking a chord on both sides of the table. Agencies and their Clients as well as the Brands themselves are aware of a period of transformation where humanity and being human is playing an increasing role in the branding process.

Be it for business development, R&D, or consensus building on building humanizing strategies for 2011, based on this feedback, I am offering special pricing to Agencies and Brands who purchase a minimum of 4 tickets. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to Alan Weinkrantz – alan@weinkrantz.com and he’ll respond to you with your specific request.

#140Conf Sponsor, Plex Systems Finds Passion on the Plant Floor

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

There’s a newfound passion on the manufacturing plant floor, where every plant worker is a “knowledge worker” – contributing a vital role to improved performance and competitiveness.

A dramatic example of this approach is Grand Rapids Spring & Stamping, a Michigan-based manufacturer that achieved annual cost savings of $1.2 million stemming from employee-generated improvement initiatives.

The automotive supplier has seen its competitors succumb to market pressures from global competition, downturns in the economy and the tumult of automotive OEMs struggling to survive.

A Shared Mindset

Despite these challenges, each worker is focused on contributing ideas to promote continuous improvement for a fundamental reason.  This mindset is the difference between thriving in a competitive marketplace and not surviving.

Using Plex Online ERP software, developed by #140Conf sponsor Plex Systems, Grand Rapids Spring & Stamping employees generated a total of 8,450 implemented continuous improvement ideas.

The suggestions ranged from optimizing the speed of a machine press to reconfiguring the shipping dock. Each employee-generated improvement reduces waste and improves the bottom line.

As the stamper has noted, “There aren’t many improvements that save $50,000 or $100,000, but we eventually achieve dramatic savings when $5 to $10 savings add up over a year. The road to success is not doing one thing 100% better – it’s doing one hundred things 1% better.“

All told, the innovative program resulted in annual savings of $1.2 million.

Everybody’s a Knowledge Worker

Provided with the right technology tools, and a culture that values continuous improvement, all employees from the shop floor to the top floor are knowledge workers.

With innovative technology and data-driven processes, these workers delivered true value by demonstrating passion on the factory floor – one idea at a time.

#140Conf Boston Insights from Ted Cohen – @spinaltap: Access Is Replacing Ownership

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Calling Ted Cohen a Rock Star is an understatement.  I had a chance to catch up with him backstage during the #140Conf Boston.

He may not have played in a famous band, but he’s been very much a part of the evolution of some of the greatest names in music history including Prince, Van Halen, The Ramones, The Pretenders, The Doobie Brothers, Coldplay, Van Morrison, Santana, Dave Matthews, The Rolling Stones, and many others.

Read about his complete biography and deep ties into the music industry here.

It’s No Longer about Ownership; It’s About Access

Ted’s take is that you are not going to fill up your iPod with 100,000 songs at a cost of $1.00 each.  He sees the next phase of the music and entertainment industry as a whole as shifting to a subscription service where having access service replaces product.  Adding to the value proposition is the curation, recommendation, personalization and editorial adds to the value by the service provider.

The video is a little over 6 minutes long.  Listen to it twice and takes serious notes.

Read Ted’s lips:  Curation. Recommendation. And Discovery.

Meet @KidCriticUSA – 13 Year Old Social Media Consultant and #140Conf Boston Character

Monday, September 13th, 2010

At tonight’s #140Conf Boston TweetUp, I had a chance to meet Lane Sutton, a 13 year old social media consultant and critic.  To my knowledge, Lane is the youngest Character who has ever been to, let alone spoken at a #140Conf event.

Lane goes under the name KidCritic, and as the name says, he does his own critiques of books, movies, and restaurants in the Boston area.

During #140Conf Boston, which takes place on Tuesday, September 14, Lane will be giving a talk about how he became an entrepreneur.

What an inspiring young man, and really nice kid!

@doubletreehtls – Doubletree Hotel Omaha; Home During #140Conf Road Trip

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Should your travels take you to Omaha, as they did during the #140Conf Road Trip, be sure to stay at the Doubletree Hotel on Dodge St.

Doubletree was a sponsor of the #140Conf Road Trip and true to form, the culture of care and the great chocolate cookie (actually one too many) shined!

Thank you Doubletree for your support.

@petesalsich – Intellectual Property Lawyer, Reinvents The Traditional Law Firm Model w/ Focus on Social Media – #140Conf Road Trip

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Why on earth would an Intellectual Property lawyer come to a #140Conf Road Trip MeetUp?  Because Pete Salsich is reinventing a whole new way to practice law, serving growing companies that may not be able to afford, let alone even need a traditional law firm.

Pete co-founded Brick House Law Group a little over a year ago.  Even it’s name is telling of how he is disrupting the law firm model.  (Remember, most law firms carry the founders’ names and not a branded name that is so indigenous to the rich architectural style and heritage of St. Louis.)

How #140Conf Road Trip Sponsor, @doubletreehtls Focuses on Its Culture & Brand Promise of Care.

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

After spending a week on the road, and staying in various Doubletree Hotels, you get to know not only the brand promise of Culture of Care, but how various franchise owners build culture around it.

This was our second visit to the Doubletree Hotel Detroit Fort Shelby.  As you can see from the mat that lays in front of the check in counter, they change the mat daily with rotating themes of care.  Since it was Saturday, it was Promise Saturday.  The message changes daily but the them of care remains the same.

If you are coming to the #140Conf Detroit on October 20, the Doubletree Hotel Detroit Fort Shelby in the place to stay and our official hotel.
