How Kors Engineering

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Plex Systems, one of our Michigan-based sponsors, was in attendance at the recently concluded 140conf Detroit.

They develop Plex Online, a cloud-based IT solution that delivers real-time information and 24/7 connection for manufacturers from the shop floor to the top floor.

After the inspiring day of presentations, the team at Plex Systems shared with us an update from their technology partner, Waterford, Michigan-based Kors Engineering. Kors integrates real-time, plant floor manufacturing technology to provide machine status updates via Twitter.

Using Twitter, a manufacturer subscribes to equipment or processes of interest to be notified of performance issues.  Operators are notified of downtime, maintenance, and status issues, while management can be notified of performance, production, or deficiencies.

This is a powerful way to use Twitter as manufacturers can monitor extensive information from their plant floor in real time, for areas of interest that they subscribe to.  Beyond monitoring manufacturing metrics, manufacturers can take advantage of being tweeted information about their facility and peripheral equipment that support manufacturing such as HVAC, energy usage, and environmental performance that may affect quality or performance.

Tracking real-time data is ideal for creating awareness, which enables intelligent, effective use of resources. This helps facilitate an environment that encourages accountability and transparency.  Manufacturers have the power to work smarter with these real-time connections.

Along with all the other inspiring innovations from Detroit area, these two technology developers let manufacturers harness “the power of now”!

A Thank You to the Detroit & Midwest Communities From #140Conf Founder / Curator, @jeffpulver

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Looking back, last week in Detroit was a pretty special time for me. I enjoyed being at the Fillmore in Detroit and taking in the warm energy shared by the #140conf Detroit community.

For the first time, in a long while, a dream of mine came true. A dream to bring together a dynamic, connected community of people from across the Midwest and North America whose presence could influence both positive change and be a catalyst forsomething good in the future.

Back when I first explored producing #140conf Detroit back in May, I thought it could be great to bring #140conf to Detroit. After visiting with Chris Barger, Buick and the team of #140conf volunteers back in June, I left Detroit with the confidence that something special was going to happen in October.

While working on #140conf Detroit, I got the idea to drive across the Midwest and from August 22nd thru August 28th, the first #140conf Road trip took place. The trip lasted 3,046 miles and I had the unique opportunity to meet people in: Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St Louis, Kansas City (both KS and MO), Omaha, Sioux Falls, Fargo, Minneapolis, Madison, Chicago and Detroit. During this trip I felt a special connection with the people with whom I met with and I invited my new friends to join us in Detroit on October 20th. I’m happy that quite a number of people took me up on my offer to represent their city at the conference.

The sessions at #140conf Detroit shared a lot of heart and soul. It was there were we heard from voices from across America as well as from the Midwest as well as those local to Detroit. I hope you had a chance to meet and make new friends. I hope last week was the start of something good which you will know about in the weeks and months ahead. You can watch and share the individual session videos from: http://140conf-telaviv.blip.tv/posts?view=archive&nsfw=dc

I thank Chris Barger and the Buick team for hosting the October 19th “Day of Giving” at their offices. The idea to bring together Causes and Social Media Practitioners from across the United States worked well and my hope is that we can repeat this again, next year, if not sooner.

I also thank: BT, DoubleTree, Garder-White, Plex Systems, NewTek/Tricaster, Weber Shandwick, WJR and Tap11 for their support of the conference. I thank all of the volunteers in Detroit who did an amazing job both before and on-site during the event. I also thank the 70+ speakers whose voices helped define the conference.

I hope that some of you are able to leverage the inspiration you left #140conf Detroit with and do something special with it.

I am committed to bringing #140conf Detroit back in 2011. If you would like to help support my efforts by being a sponsor in 2011, please let me know. And if you would like to speak or know of someone whose story should be shared in Detroit, please let me know. The formal “Call for Speakers” will be announced in a few months.

Thanks again for being a part of #140conf: Detroit.

Best regards,

Jeff

Looking Towards #140Conf Detroit and Thinking About Manufacturing in Real Time

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

#140conf Detroit sponsor Plex Systems recently reminded us of cases where US manufacturers use innovative technology to implement ideas that were not possible before the advent of real time data processing.  These new approaches become examples of the power of real time data.

For example, a production scheduler on the shop floor of an automotive supplier sees in real time when materials, tooling or labor is not available to run a specific job. This lets the production staff person schedule a job to run in its place, reducing costly downtime.

Likewise, when a manufacturer’s purchasing department sees, in real time, that their customer issued a surprise order, the supplier can rapidly adjust order quantities.

In yet another example from the Plex Online Resource Center, an automotive supplier uses real time production data, available via a secure Web browser, to validate orders before they go into production. The worker enforces the setup, verifies that selected operators have received the correct training, and ensures that all needed tooling is properly maintained.   This real time visibility contributes to increased production quality.

In all, manufacturing with real time data visibility delivers a significant competitive advantage.

#140Conf Sponsor, Plex Systems Finds Passion on the Plant Floor

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

There’s a newfound passion on the manufacturing plant floor, where every plant worker is a “knowledge worker” – contributing a vital role to improved performance and competitiveness.

A dramatic example of this approach is Grand Rapids Spring & Stamping, a Michigan-based manufacturer that achieved annual cost savings of $1.2 million stemming from employee-generated improvement initiatives.

The automotive supplier has seen its competitors succumb to market pressures from global competition, downturns in the economy and the tumult of automotive OEMs struggling to survive.

A Shared Mindset

Despite these challenges, each worker is focused on contributing ideas to promote continuous improvement for a fundamental reason.  This mindset is the difference between thriving in a competitive marketplace and not surviving.

Using Plex Online ERP software, developed by #140Conf sponsor Plex Systems, Grand Rapids Spring & Stamping employees generated a total of 8,450 implemented continuous improvement ideas.

The suggestions ranged from optimizing the speed of a machine press to reconfiguring the shipping dock. Each employee-generated improvement reduces waste and improves the bottom line.

As the stamper has noted, “There aren’t many improvements that save $50,000 or $100,000, but we eventually achieve dramatic savings when $5 to $10 savings add up over a year. The road to success is not doing one thing 100% better – it’s doing one hundred things 1% better.“

All told, the innovative program resulted in annual savings of $1.2 million.

Everybody’s a Knowledge Worker

Provided with the right technology tools, and a culture that values continuous improvement, all employees from the shop floor to the top floor are knowledge workers.

With innovative technology and data-driven processes, these workers delivered true value by demonstrating passion on the factory floor – one idea at a time.

How Plex Systems is Using the Social Internet and the State of NOW to Help Manufacturers Around the World Design, Build and Deliver New Products

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

It’s been a tough road for manufacturers.  The sector has been hit hard over the decades with increasing global competition from low-cost producers; spiraling energy, material and labor costs; a sputtering world economy and other challenges.

One bright spot is centered on a community of manufacturers in automotive, medical device, metal stamping and other areas, who collaborate, share and succeed with an innovative manufacturing technology solution.

Manufacturing-Specific Technology

A group of forward thinking manufacturers, many based in the Midwest, but others with global locations, rely on a technology solution called Plex Online from Plex Systems, one of the sponsors of the #140Conf Detroit.

Their vision of “Shop floor to top floor” features and functions help a manufacturer streamline their entire operations – from purchasing, inventory management and production to operations, quality and beyond.  There’s a lot you can learn from Plex Systems when you are at #140Conf regardless of the type of work or personal interests you may have.

It’s one thing to think of the social Internet as a place to work and share content and information, but it takes things to a totally different level when you are manufacturing a product that may have a global team involved.

Plex delivers their solution as a Software as a Service (SaaS), and accessed via a secure Internet browser   Manufacturers benefit from a “community driven” product enhancement model, and continuously align their business solutions to fit current business requirements.

Connect. Share. Collaborate. Build.

Even though all manufacturers run off a single centrally-managed system, each manufacturing company operates within its own configuration and can opt in to system features as needed.

How has this community been able to succeed with the technology?  The system offers social media connections via online forums built directly into the system, and an innovative Wiki where users share content and ideas.  Manufacturers have the tools necessary to initiate, connect, discuss, and design how they collectively solve challenges and enhance the product.

For instance, one supplier suggested an enhancement to the purchasing system to help manage and track fluctuating material costs.  This change was implemented by Plex Systems developers, then shared with all other suppliers facing the same business requirements.

Another system enhancement helps automotive manufacturers consolidate production reporting.  Here again, the entire community benefitted by a feature change that originated with just one manufacturer.

When you’re at #140Conf be sure to stop by and learn more about Plex Systems.  They’re a great example of a Detroit area company that is using the social Internet and the State of NOW to improve business performance — improvements accumulated from the real-world knowledge of their community.

What’s The Connection? Why Is A Furniture Store A Sponsor of The #140Conf Detroit?

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Guest Blogger, Leslie Carothers (@tkpleslie) ,CEO of The Kaleidoscope Partnership and the social media agency of record for #140conf Detroit sponsor, Gardner White Furniture, on why a furniture retailer was sponsoring a conference about the real time web.

By Leslie Carothers
When we were first hired by Gardner White Furniture (@GardnerWhite), we were tasked with coming up with innovative ways to engage young families, their next generation of customers, with the Gardner White brand. For 97 years in Detroit, the Gardner White value proposition has always been: “Providing value for families.”

After listening closely for 3 months on Twitter to what people in Detroit were discussing, we could see what they really cared most about was the future of their city and whether or not there would be job opportunities there for them and their families so they could stay.

It’s no secret that Detroit has had major issues with unemployment which has resulted in the loss of many young families who have been forced to live elsewhere in order to create a secure future for themselves and their children.  We also could hear that many people in Detroit loved their city passionately and we saw that there were many grassroots efforts underway to rebuild and rebrand Detroit that were not getting any attention in the local or national press.

So, in the spring of this year, the owner of Gardner White Furniture, Barb Tronstein, (@BarbTronstein) agreed to our idea to hold a “Brainstorm For A Better Detroit” meeting. We had no idea if anyone would show up or not. The entire meeting was set up through Twitter and via phone calls with Eric Brown of Urbane Apartments(@Eric_Urbane) and was held at his popular co-working space in Detroit, @Urbane_Space.

On the night of the event, approximately 20 people showed up. Barb and the team she brought in were both surprised at this turnout since none of us had ever met anyone who showed up. Barb  listened and took notes.  Afterwards, we discussed with Barb what she had heard, and what she had heard was: “What everyone who attended really wants are opportunities for their businesses so they can grow and succeed and stay here with their families.”

Enter the #140conference. As probably everyone reading this knows who is an active user of social media, the #140conf is the most famous conference in the world about the impact of the real time web on businesses and individuals, attracts the world’s best speakers in whatever city it is held in, and gets an enormous turnout-both online and offline.

We proposed to Barb that Gardner White sponsor the conference as a way to show that she really heard the group that night and took meaningful action.

Why is sponsoring the #140conference Detroit taking meaningful action?

Because the #140conf Detroit provides excellent networking opportunities for the people that attend. These networking opportunities lead to jobs. Jobs lead to Detroit’s young families feeling confident enough to stay in Detroit, buy a home or rent an apartment and, eventually, furnish it.

Is this a huge leap of faith for a furniture store? Yes, but Barb is willing to trust that you, the young Detroit families impacted most by the #140conf Detroit, will “get” what she is doing , appreciate the guts it took for a 97 year old established furniture store to go so far *out of the box* with social media in order to support a web conference and, eventually and hopefully, find ways to let her know you recognize her “leap of faith.”

Three generations of Barb’s family have been raised in Detroit. She knows the #140conference Detroit is important to the people who were there that night at the meeting and what it can mean to those working so hard to re-invent Detroit at the grass roots level.

Gardner White is very appreciative of the local volunteers who are spearheading the #140conference effort. Christopher Barger (@cbarger) of lead sponsor @Buick, @adrianpittman who took the original lead in organizing the volunteers, @estrellabella10 who is doing a great job with speakers, @ericafinley @HajjFlemings @DaveMurr, @djmeph @HubertGAM and all the other volunteers giving so generously of their time.

Gardner White  hopes the international attention the #140conf receives will put Detroit firmly back on the map in the minds of investors everywhere and let them know  Detroit is a viable and desirable place to invest so they will come to Detroit and help rebuild it for the families Gardner White hopes to serve for the next 97 years.

Please follow @Gardner White and @BarbTronstein on Twitter and please *Like* Gardner White on Facebook at http://facebook.com/GardnerWhiteFurniture . Please take a minute to share with Gardner White what you think of this *new way* they are providing long term value- that matters -to the Detroit and Michigan families Gardner White serves.
